About Us
The purpose of the Office in the African Ministry is to assist the Bishop in facilitating the participation of Catholics of African descent in South Georgia in the mission of the Church. We do this in a number of ways:
- Fostering and developing opportunities for African American Catholic youth to receive academic, cultural and spiritual growth.
- Identifying, recommending and enabling African American Catholics to assume leadership roles.
- Assisting pastoral leaders in their ministry to African American Catholics.
- Carrying out the goals and objectives of the National Black Catholic Congress in strengthening the African American family.
- Assisting parishes in the implementation of pastoral plans on combating racism.
- Assisting parishes in the implementation of the National Black Catholic Pastoral Plan.
- Celebrating the history and contributions of African Americans to the Catholic Church.
- Promoting evangelization among African Americans and encouraging vocations to the priesthood and religious life among African American Catholics.
Annually, the Office sponsors a Day of Reflection at one parish in the diocese as a prelude to sending a delegation to the National Black Catholic Congress.
