In the middle years of the last century a small group of Catholics in Harris County, along with the priests from St. Anne’s Church in Columbus, began celebrating Mass in homes and in hotels in Hamilton and in Pine Mountain. Some five years later, in 1964, a parcel of land was purchased for the purpose of constructing a permanent location to celebrate Mass. The property’s existing gas station was converted into the worship space that served as the Catholic community’s chapel. In 1972, the chapel was exchanged for a chalet which became the new church. After thirty years of Masses and fellowship in the chalet, the land under and surrounding our current church was purchased. In 2006, on the Feast of Christ the King, the former pastor of St. Anne’s Church and the then Bishop of Savannah, J. Kevin Boland designated Christ the King a parish. Fr. Ron Madden was named the parish’s first pastor.

Nearly eleven years later though, on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a lightning strike and subsequent fire caused significant damage to the church. As has always been the custom of the Catholics in Harris County, they gathered together and resolutely began rebuilding. After two years of diligent prayer and difficult work, the then Bishop of Savannah, Gregory John Hartmayer, OFM, Conv., was in Pine Mountain rededicating our church.

With roots descending ever deeper into the soil of Harris County, the Catholic community continues to flourish. Young families with their many children, all born in this century, gather alongside the few remaining original members of the Catholic mission in Harris County, to celebrate Mass at Christ the King. With just a little imagination, the parish is looking into the middle years of this century, when there will be a celebration of the centenary of the Catholic mission in Harris County; a time when our now young children will have their own children, and together they will worship alongside the members of our long-standing families, visitors from around our country, and new parishioners from each of our surrounding communities. It is thus the parish’s hope that the grace given by Jesus Christ, will aid, an already rooted and ever-growing family of families, in serving Him and the people of Harris and Talbot counties.

The Catholic community in Harris and Talbot counties remains, as it always has, in the merciful hands of Christ who is our King.
