PIER GIORGIO FRASSATI

I think of the example of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. He said, Jesus pays me a visit every morning in Holy Communion, and I return the visit in the meagre way I know how, visiting the poor…He served the poor very quietly and unassumingly…Imagine that, on the day before his death when he was gravely ill, he was giving directions on how his friends in need should be helped. At his funeral, his family and friends were stunned by the presence of so many poor people unknown to them. They had been befriended and helped by the young Pier Giorgio." - Pope Francis

The Saints on Almsgiving

Nobody is so poor he has nothing to give, and nobody is so rich he has nothing to receive.
– Pope John Paul II

The greatest challenge of the day is: how to bring about a revolution of the heart, a revolution which has to start with each one of us. When we begin to take the lowest places, to wash the feet of others, to love our brothers with that burning love, that passion which led to the cross, then we can truly say, 'Now I have begun.'
– Dorothy Day

At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by 'I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in.'
– Mother Teresa

You cannot all abandon your possessions, but at least you can change your attitude about them. All getting separates you from others; all giving unites you to others.
– Francis of Assisi

We need to be poor! Let us live an ordinary life, but, beloved, let us live it with a passionate love for God. Become a mystery. Stretch one hand out to God, the other to your neighbour. Be cruciform…Christ’s cross will be our revolution and it will be a revolution of love!
– Catherine de Hueck Dougherty

It is easy enough to tell the poor to accept their poverty as God's will when you yourself have warm clothes and plenty of food and medical care and a roof over your head and no worry about the rent. But if you want them to believe you, try to share some of their poverty and see if you can accept it as God's will yourself!
– Thomas Merton

Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received – only what you have given: a full heart, enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage.
– Francis of Assisi

The rich man who gives to the poor does not bestow alms but pays a debt.
– St. Ambrose of Milan

It can only be disgraceful for some Christians to snore while other Christians are in peril.
– Thomas More

Give something, however small, to the one in need. For it is not small to one who has nothing. Neither is it small to God, if we have given what we could.
– Gregory Nazianzen

Help one another with the generosity of the Lord, and despise no one. When you have the opportunity to do good, do not let it go by.
– Polycarp of Smyrna
