Bishop Hartmayer to confer 95 service awards November 26

During this season of giving thanks, the Catholic Church will recognize almost 100 people who have given of their time and talent—some for as many as 50 years—to their church and community.

Savannah Bishop Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv. will confer the Gartland Service Award on 95 South Georgians at the 11:30 a.m. Mass on the Feast of Christ the King, Sunday, November 26 in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist.

Pastors of Catholic parishes nominate parishioners for the award, named for the first bishop of the Diocese of Savannah. The recipients are volunteers who have worked quietly behind the scenes to make a difference in parish and community life.

All reflect the life of service of Francis X. Gartland, who was named bishop of the newly-erected Diocese of Savannah in July 1850. When the yellow fever struck the City of Savannah he traveled from house to house tirelessly administering the sacraments to the sick until he himself caught the fever. He died September 20, 1854.

All are invited to attend the Gartland Awards Mass.

The service will stream live at www.diosav.org/livestream and www.savannahcathedral.org
