Father Ed Frank, retired pastor, equestrian dies in Rochester

Father Edward R. Frank, retired priest of the Diocese of Savannah, died June 8, 2017 at Mercy Center in Rochester, New York.

Father Frank, 90, a native of Rochester was ordained at Pontifical College Josephinum in Worthington, Ohio in 1957. He volunteered to serve in the Diocese of Savannah because of the shortage of priests there.

He began his priestly service as assistant pastor of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Savannah in 1957. He served at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah and in parishes in Macon, Jesup, Waycross, Columbus and Augusta, Georgia before retiring as pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Moultrie, Georgia in 2001.

An accomplished equestrian, for decades he served as chaplain for the Belle Meade Fox Hunt in Thomson, Georgia, reciting an ancient prayer of St. Hubert of France as he blessed the hounds, riders and foxes on the first Saturday of November.

He lived in retirement at St. Mary on the Hill Parish in Augusta, Georgia for five years before moving to Mercy Center in Rochester. He recently celebrated his 60th anniversary of priestly ministry.

Survivors include his sister, Teresa Frank Smith; a brother, Herbert Frank and his wife, Elaine; sister-in-law, Mildred Frank; his cousin, Sister Joyce Whitman SSND; and several nieces, nephews, and three great-nieces.

Visitation for Father Frank will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday, June 12, at Mercy Center.

Bishop J. Kevin Boland, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Savannah, will celebrate the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 13, at Mercy Center. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
