St. Frances Cabrini School to close at end of school year

SAVANNAH—St. Frances Cabrini School, a Catholic elementary school, will close at the end of the current school year due to a decline in enrollment.

The announcement was made by the Diocese of Savannah, which operates the school, located at 11500 Middleground Road in Savannah.

With a steady decline in enrollment at the school over the past six years, St. Frances Cabrini Parish has been unable to manage the financial impact of the decrease in tuition collection.

“With direction from the parish Finance Council, the Office of Catholic Schools and approval from Bishop Hartmayer and after careful review and prayerful discernment, it is with a heavy heart that it has been decided to close St. Frances Cabrini Catholic School at the end of the current school year," said St. Frances Cabrini pastor Fr. Gabriel Cummings.

He added, “For 18 years, St. Frances Cabrini Catholic School has provided students with a Christ-centered environment that has powered their potential. We are proud of and grateful to the faculty and staff for their dedication and service to St. Frances Cabrini Catholic School and to the greater St. Frances Cabrini Church community for all they have done to support its mission through time, talent and treasure. For the remainder of the school year, teachers and staff will continue to provide students with the very best religious and academic education.”

Catholic Schools Superintendent Michelle Kroll said, "In the eighteen years that St. Frances Cabrini Catholic School served our community, the numerous students and families that have benefited from the excellent Catholic education and faith-filled community will only be measured by the impact of their service and contributions to our community and the world.  Saddened though we may be at the closing of the school, we celebrate the gifts St. Frances Cabrini has provided to students, families and the community."

St. Frances Cabrini Catholic School opened its doors to students in grades PK and K in Fall 2000 after hard work and dedication from St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church’s pastor at the time, Father Francis (later Monsignor) J. Nelson, and parishioners. Adding a grade each year, in Spring 2009 the school graduated its first class.

St. Frances Cabrini Catholic School will partner with St. James Catholic School to ensure that all current students wishing to continue their faith-based education will be welcomed with open arms to the Charger family for the 2018-2019 school year.

St. James will host an open house on Sunday, February 4 at 1:00 p.m. for Cabrini families only. The open house will provide Cabrini families with the opportunity to tour the facility and ask questions. This open house is for parents and students.
