Founded in 1876 by the Sisters of Mercy, Mount de Sales Academy is the only Catholic, independent, college preparatory school in middle Georgia. Since 2004, Mount de Sales Academy has served students beginning in grade 6 through grade 12. Today, the school enrolls over 500 students with remarkably diverse backgrounds, including 63% non-Catholic families and 45% students of color.
Since the original convent and school buildings were demolished in the 1970s, Mount de Sales has had numerous capital projects to expand its campus. Fifteen years ago, a new 77-acre athletic campus opened and, in 2015, the school invested over $1 million in building enhancements to align with redevelopment changes in Macon's College Hill Corridor, a two-square mile area between Mercer University and the downtown business district.
The current President, David Held, will be retiring next summer after an extraordinary 14-year tenure. To this end, the school has recently launched a nationwide search for its next school leader. The next President will have the greatest responsibility for the overall management of the school, and most importantly, will serve as the spiritual leader of the community. The President is the sole employee of a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees.
