Vocations

The Diocese of Savannah primarily serves rural communities where the missions are small, distances are vast, and the love for Jesus Christ is deep. We are a missionary diocese in need of young men to serve as priests with a missionary spirit that is sacrificial and creative.

While the Diocese does encompass larger cities such as Augusta, Savannah, Macon, Columbus, Albany, and Valdosta, the majority of its 38,000 square miles are filled with peaches, strawberries, blueberries, cucumbers, onions, peanuts, pecans, cotton, and many other crops. The faith is alive not only in the cities, but also in the small agrarian communities, some of which have had a Catholic presence for almost two hundred years.

As a missionary diocese our resources are limited, yet by God’s grace and the generosity of many, the presence of the Catholic Church is felt in a territory where less than three percent of the population is Catholic. The rapid increase of Latin American immigrants in the past decades has transformed our diocese and we look forward to a future where Christ continues to be proclaimed in our diocese. Pope Francis calls every baptized person to be missionary disciple. This call resounds in South Georgia, and most especially in the hearts of our seminarians and priests.

I am glad you have reached the Vocation Office website. Take a look and read about this unique call in the life of the Church. Could God be calling you to serve Him as a priest or religious?

Thou Art a Priest Forever

To live in the midst of the world with no desire for its pleasure…
To be a member of every family yet belonging to none…
To share all sufferings; to penetrate all secrets; to heal all wounds…
To daily go from men to God to offer Him their petitions…
To return from God to men to offer them His hope…
To have a heart of fire for charity and a heart of bronze for chastity…
To bless and be blest forever.
O God, what a life, and it is yours, O Priest of Jesus Christ!
