Statement on the Holy Father’s Reported Comments Regarding Civil Unions

On October 21, 2020 it was reported that the Holy Father, Pope Francis, made comments in the context of a secular documentary film regarding same-sex civil unions. Please note that these comments do not constitute a definitive teaching on the matters of faith and morals that we hold near and dear as Catholics and do not alter Church teaching on marriage. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1660) states the marriage covenant, by which a man and a woman form with each other an intimate communion of life and love, has been founded and endowed with its own special laws by the Creator.

The Holy Father does not use secular documentaries to communicate and offer definitive teaching on issues of faith and morals.

Declaración en relación a los comentarios del Santo Padre del 21 de octubre, 2020

El 21 de octubre 2020 se comunicó que el Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco, hizo comentarios en el contexto de un documental secular sobre las uniones civiles entre personas del mismo sexo. Cabe reiterar que estos comentarios no constituyen una enseñanza definitiva sobre asuntos de fe y moral que valoramos como católicos y estos no cambian la enseñanza de la Iglesia sobre el matrimonio. El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica (# 1660) afirma que la alianza matrimonial, por la que un hombre y una mujer constituyen una íntima comunidad de vida y de amor, fue fundada y dotada de sus leyes propias por el Creador.

El Santo Padre no utiliza documentales seculares para comunicar y ofrecer una enseñanza definitiva sobre cuestiones de fe y moral.
