Tenebrae Service and Concert

Event Date/Time:
Wednesday, April 12, 2017 - 7:00pm

Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and Friends of Cathedral Music present Tenebrae, a liturgical service featuring Gregorian Chant and Gregorio Allegri's Miserere on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. The concert will be sung by the Cathedral Choir and a quintet of guest musicians.

This Holy Week event is free and open to the public.

After Allegri composed the mysterious Miserere in the 1630s, it became illegal for the music to be performed outside of the Sistine Chapel. Legend has it that Mozart heard it there as a 14-year-old, then wrote it down from memory and made the piece more widely heard. It was eventually published in 1771.

Tenebrae comes from the Latin meaning darkness or shadows, and the intent of this "Service of Shadows" is to use powerfully effective music, readings, and the extinguishing of candlelight to symbolize the darkness of the impending death of Jesus.
